Pursue Passion with a Purpose
"Do it with passion, or not at all." -Rosa Nouchette Carey
Every single person has passion. The crazy part about passion is that we all use it differently. Sometimes when people are not passionate about what you are passionate about, you find it frustrating. When you take a step back though, you become really thankful that every single person has a different passion, or else the world would be boring.
I used the words: pursue, passion, and purpose in the title of this blog because I am a firm believer that they are all reliant on each other. You cannot have a passion that you are not willing to pursue. You cannot pursue a passion without a purpose.
One of my favorite things to do is sit down with a person over a Starbucks coffee and simply, listen. It takes little to no time to figure out what someone's passions are. Why? Because we tend to talk about what we desire to do with out lives. Remember, purpose fuels passion. Winston Churchill lived a very interesting life, and he was extremely successful. This quote by him should help one differentiate a passion from an interest.
Some of the most famous people in history claim that it was not their skills or smarts that they are remembered for, but for their reckless pursuit of their passions in life. Albert Einstein said,
The dream does not just start to come true, the moment you find your passion. This is where pursuit comes into play. You will stay stagnant, like your feet are fastened in concrete, if you do not pursue your passion. So many times, passion dies because people sit around and wait for opportunity to come knocking on the door. Instead, you need to be out there knocking on every door until one opens. Rascal Flatts got it right when they wrote these lyrics in their hit song "My Wish."
My grandpa always reminds me of the old saying, "Do what you love and you will never work a day in your life." He has a point. Yes, there will be some days that are better than others, but why not choose to do something you are passionate about for the rest of your life. Gary Vaynerchuck, a very successful entrepreneur, begs the question, "Why would you do something that involves you hating 64.28% of your life?" What he is getting at is, why would you choose to live for Friday evening through Sunday in order to "get away" from work. Reality is, you will spend more of your life at work, than you will at home. Do something you love.
The last part of the equation is purpose.
If you are a follower of Christ, you know that our purpose is bringing glory to God. Here is where a lot of people miss a very important point. They think to bring glory to God in their career, that they need to be a pastor. No, no, no... God created us all with different passions. This is the beauty of our Creator.
If you have a passion for
music, be a musician
writing, be an author
sports, be an athlete
Colossians 3:23 says, "Work willingly at whatever you do, as though you were working for the Lord rather than for people."
Paul says in 1 Corinthians 9:26, "So I run with purpose in every step..."
Whatever you end up doing, remember that the only reason you are able to do what you love is because of the reckless love Jesus pours out on us. Do not buy into the lie that your career has to be separate from your ministry. The story of how God uses you and your passions for His glory is ministry.
If you pursue Jesus, you will find Him.
If you have passion for Jesus, your passion shall never be extinguished.
Your purpose is bringing glory to Him.
What are you waiting for? Go do what you love, and do it with all you have.
